Between Torah Learning and Wage Earning : The London Experience and Lessons for Israel

The study focuses on the relations between Torah learning and wage earning among haredi men in the ultra-Orthodox community of London's Stamford Hill area. It reveals that unlike in Israel, where a 'society of scholars' is the current mode of life among haredi society, in London exists what he calls 'a society of learners and earners'. Some two-thirds of the men earn a living, while continuing to be engaged in some degree of learning. The research fingdings show the balance between Torah learning and wage earning in London that is manifested in the following types (according to degree of commitment in various combinations): 'A full-time learner' who devotes all of his time to Torah learning: 'an occasionally-earning learner' engaged in random employment during vacations; 'a part-time learner' who divides his time equally between Torah learning and employment; 'a regularly-learning earner' who sets aside time for Torah learning every day of the week, and 'an occasionally- learning earner', who makes do with Torah learning mainly on the Sabbath and holidays.

Reasonable Accommodation in the Modern Workplace

Potential and Limits of the Integrative Logics of Labour Law, is the first study to analyse, on a global scale, how employment discrimination law gives shape to an accommodated workplace in three main areas of interest: age, disability, and religion/belief. Increasingly, the modern workplace faces challenges of diversity and employability, and there is a need to match workforce diversity, or workersand’ own characteristics and choices, with employersand’ organizational and business requirements. In this context, the notion of reasonable accommodation inevitably arises. Religion, Equality and Employment in Europe : The case for Reasonable Accommodation

The management of religious and ideological diversity remains a key challenge of our time – deeply entangled with debates about the nature of liberal democracy, equality, social cohesion, minorities and nationalism, security and foreign policy. This book explores this challenge at the level of the workplace in Europe. People do not surrender their religion of belief at the gates of their workplace, nor should they be required to do so. But what are the limits of accommodating religious belief in the workplace, particularly when it clashes with other fundamental rights and freedoms?
Using a comparative and socio-legal approach that emphasises the practical role of human rights, anti-discrimination law and employment protection, this book argues for an enforceable right to reasonable accommodation on the grounds of religion and belief in the workplace in Europe. In so doing, it draws on the case law of Europe's two supranational courts, three country studies –Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK – as well as developments in the US and Canada. In Religion and belief in United Kingdom employment law , Frank Cranmer discusses the relationships between religion and employment in the wider context. It is a particularly complex area of law that touches on a wide variety of issues, ranging from the basic question, ‘exactly what constitutes a “religion” or “belief”?’ to ‘what kinds of religious dress do my employees have a right to wear to work?’ and ‘what religious standards – if any – can I, as an employer, demand of my employees?’. The purpose of the study is to provide an overview of some of the current issues and problems surrounding the law relating to employment by religious organisations and the manifestation of religion in the workplace. Because the complexity of the law means that individual outcomes in disputed cases are often depend heavily on the facts, it does so primarily by examining recent case-law.
